The Mansfield Fire Preservation Society was formed in November 1983 by a group of Fire Station Personnel, civilians and other interested parties who were keen to maintain, increase and exhibit a collection of Fire Service Memorabilia.

During 1995 the building was completely refurbished and decorated as it was to become the temporary fire station for approximately 18 months whilst the original fire station was being demolished and the new one constructed on the same site. When the new Fire Station was completed, this building then became a Museum.

When the old station was demolished two sets of the old appliance bay doors were saved and fitted to the front of the Museum to give the appearance of a two-bay Fire Station.

The Museum is under constant development and new exhibits are added regularly.
